Documentation::Motivations

As an average GNU C/C++ user, I've been looking for some sites that compare C and C++ compilers performances using various constraints. Yet, such sites show a lot of informations and don't really help to answer straightfordwardly simple questions, related to my usual concerns; eg. :

  • "what are the overall relatives performances of Linux GCC 3.2.3 and GCC 4.0.2 on that bunch of benchmarks ?"
  • "what gain may I expect from a given compilation optimisation flag on GCC 4.1.x ?"

(Keeping in mind that, broadly speaking, a benchmark is just a performance indicator on a specialized task (see comp.benchmarks FAQ), of course.)

To do so, I'm trying to develop a benchmarks suite based on well-known benchmarks and applications. This portal can be used to browse results dynamicaly, and to export them.
